A few weeks ago I was talking to a parent and during our conversation she explained that her four year old wanted to wear a cape to dinner. She didn’t let him because she didn’t want him to be “that kid”.
Although I didn’t say anything at that time, I thought to myself, “My child has been “that kid” on more occasions than I can remember.” I know many of just want our kids to fit in because that is what they are supposed to do. That is what we were taught.
However, what happens if our kids don’t fit in with everyone else? Maybe they will turn out like Sir Richard Branson. They could follow the foot steps of someone like Mark Zuckerberg. Or worse, they may end up like Steve Jobs.
All fitting in does is gets you to be like everyone else. It’s ok to be different. Encourage your kids to think outside box, think differently, to stand up for something they believe in, and to lead and not follow.
Let them be superheros if they want. Who knows one day they may end up saving the world!
