Yes – being a parent is definitely difficult. There are sleepless nights, repeating the alphabet 700 times a day (like you didn’t know it already), and the constant fighting to get kids to eat. However, if you look at fatherhood from a strictly selfish view, it really rocks!
Being a father immediately gives you a pass to be a kid all over again. It is almost like Peter Pan flying you into Never, Never Land himself. I realize some of us get jealous of our single, kid-less friends, but seriously we have the advantage.
When was the last time your childless friend was able to have a nerf gun war? Can he go to the Laser Tag arena without looking a little out of place? I bet most of your single friends don’t have someone they can walk outside with at a moment’s notice to throw the football. And when is the last time they had a lego battle?
Below you will find a list of some of my favorite things to do with my kids. I will be honest, most of these things are for my sheer enjoyment, but at the same time I am able to spend time with my kids and get out of Honey Do lists!
1. Having a Light Saber fight
I love light saber or Nerf sword fights. They are fun, annoy my wife a little, and you can’t get in trouble for hitting your kids with Nerf Swords!
2. Watching the Star Wars Trilogy (the original trilogy obviously)
3. Taking your kids to see any of the new super hero movies (there are like 3 new ones that come out a year)
4. Playing the Wii, Playstion, or Xbox
5. Dominating at Laser Tag
Anyone can go bowling, but it is much more fun with the bumper lanes! Plus you are almost guaranteed to beat your younger opponents!
7. Teaching your kids how to fish
If you want some quiet time, take your kids fishing and tell them they can’t talk or they will scare off the fish.
8. Chuck E Cheese
They sell beer at this place – enough said!
9. Playing sports in the back yard
The summer is awesome because from the time your kids are five it’s like you have a best friend again to throw the frisbee, football, or baseball with outside.
10. Playing Angry Birds
My son loves playing Angry Birds (I think), but so do I. Sometimes he will ask me to finish a difficult level and that will turn into a 20 minute session.
11. Sled Riding
This is probably one of my favorite activities to do with the kids. Although I’m a little sore the next morning, I still take a running start and sled as far as I can! The kids love seeing me go down and I love watching their faces as they speed down the snow!
12. Working Out
My oldest son recently decided to start working out with me. The best part about that is every time I lift a weight that weighs more than 10lbs he is amazed. He thinks his dad is Superman and I feel like a stud. Unfortunately my wife is not impressed no matter how much weight I can lift 🙁
13. Nerf Gun Fights
I know some people are probably against having toy guns in their house, but I am not one of those people. Actually we have enough toy armour to arm our entire block.
Anyways, there is nothing better than hiding through the house with your weapon of choice and shooting each other! We even have a game set up where the kids run around our kitchen/morning room and I see how many times I can shoot their bottoms. It may sound weird, but you will never hear as many laughs.
14. Dance Parties
I’m not much of a dancer and the only time I usually dance if I have a few cocktails. However, it is fun to turn on some music, blast the strobe light on my phone, and break it down with the kids!
15. Hide and Seek
This may be one of my worst parenting tricks, but the world record for finding my kids was 32 minutes. Yes…I am not proud of that, but I had a nice nap.
What are some of the things you do with your children that your childless friends cant?
16. Legos – Sheer awesomeness.
